The After Action Battalion was founded by a group of combat-wounded Marines who served together in 2nd Battalion, 7th Marines, based at Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center Twentynine Palms, California.
These Marines deployed together on two combat tours: first to Al Anbar Province, Iraq, in 2007, and later to Helmand Province, Afghanistan, in 2008. Each of the founding members of the After Action Battalion is a recipient of the Purple Heart, having sustained severe, life-threatening combat injuries during these deployments.
Following their own recoveries at military treatment facilities across the country, the founders gained firsthand experience with the physical, emotional, and mental challenges that accompany traumatic injury. They understand not only the shock and uncertainty that follow a life-changing wound, but also the courage, perseverance, and determination required to navigate the long road to recovery.
When reflecting on the most meaningful moments of their own healing journeys, the founders consistently recall the compassion, encouragement, and support they received from family members, fellow service members, caregivers, and veteran-serving organizations. Those experiences inspired them to establish the After Action Battalion with a simple mission: to pay that support forward.
Drawing upon their collective experiences and deep understanding of the recovery process, the founders are committed to helping newly injured service members and their families navigate the challenges ahead. By providing practical assistance, mentorship, encouragement, and connection, the After Action Battalion strives to deliver the same types of support that made a lasting difference in their own recoveries.
We invite you to join us in supporting our nation’s wounded service members and their families as they begin their own journeys toward healing and recovery.
Our mission is to provide practical assistance, encouragement, and meaningful support through the following programs:
Recovery Care Packages
Thoughtfully assembled by our team, these care packages contain items designed to promote well-being, boost morale, and address some of the often-overlooked needs that can arise during extended hospital stays and rehabilitation.
Military Honors Preservation
Professional preservation and custom framing of medals, certificates, flags, and other meaningful recognitions received by service members during their recovery.
Family Travel Assistance
Financial assistance to help cover travel expenses for a primary family member or caregiver so they can be present to support their loved one during recovery.
Family Care Packages
Support packages for caregivers that include personal care items, meal delivery gift cards, and other resources intended to ease the burdens that often accompany a loved one’s hospitalization and rehabilitation.
Unit Reunions and Healing Retreats
Opportunities for post-9/11 combat veterans and military units to reconnect, strengthen bonds, and support one another through shared experiences and fellowship.
Continued Outreach and Support
Ongoing engagement with those served by our programs to provide encouragement, maintain connections, and ensure that no wounded warrior feels forgotten after leaving the hospital.
At the After Action Battalion, we believe recovery extends beyond physical healing. By supporting both wounded service members and their families, we strive to foster resilience, restore hope, and reinforce the bonds of brotherhood and community that are essential to the recovery journey.
